54 North Carolina Economic Development Guide The U.S. Census Bureau estimated North Carolina's population at 9,943,964 on July 1, 2014. That makes it the country's ninth most populous state, which is one position higher than the year prior. Its population increased by 4.3% since Census Day, April 1, 2010. Charlotte, with more than 803,000 residents, is the state's largest city. It's in Mecklenburg County, which became the state's fi rst with more than 1 million residents in 2014. Wake County, home to North Carolina's second largest city, Raleigh, and its 432,133 residents, is expected to surpass the mark next. The Census Bureau estimated its 2014 population at almost 999,000.
