October 2012, the China-based computer manufacturer — the world's largest — said it would invest $2 million and add 40,000 square feet of PC production in the small Guilford County town. It already employed 185 there in logistics, PC refurbishment and custom products. Some of them work in the $10 million, 200,000-square-foot fulfllment center Lenovo built in 2008. It's one of the most productive in the company, says Tom Looney, vice president and general manager of North America operations. Through May 2013, workers at the center had shipped 20 million computers and accessories such as keyboards. That same month, Lenovo relocated its Internet sales and telesales customer service center from India to Raleigh, creating another 100 jobs and increasing its satisfed-cus- tomer rate by 25% in its frst 30 days. The N.C. Department of Commerce says all of Lenovo's operations combined have an estimated $1 billion annual economic impact on the state. The investments herald a new era for the state's best-known manufacturing region. It has endured some dark days as, one by one, giant factories closed as plants opened overseas.
